These optomechanical components require a very tight fit between the OD of the cells and the ID of the barrels. The customers often want a fit of .0002-.0005 between the cells and barrels in order to optimize performance of the finished unit.Wordingham has developed processes that work well, while maintaining reasonable pricing. Usually this would be accomplished by having extremely tight tolerances on both the barrel ID and the cell OD. The barrel is black anodized aluminum, so holding tolerances that would be needed would be very difficult and result in a high amount of scrap. This would drive up the price on the part that is usually the most expensive part in the system. Our process has virtually no scrap and the customer gets the fit they need at a reasonable price.
